Under the Hammer
Have you ever seen Homes Under the Hammer? It’s a morning TV show where people buy houses at auction and do them up, to sell them on for profit, rent them out or even live there themselves. You see the house before the auction, then the auction itself, then you hear the winning bidder’s plans for the property and then you see their progress. The thing I love most about it is when you see how the property was, the camera really quickly shows the finished work. So you get to see what is often a big transformation. Ultimately it’s the work that goes on within the property that adds value to it. There’s a Bible message here. The Bible tells us that we’ve all done wrong-that despite how we try to live we all fall short of God’s standards. So Jesus died on the cross in our place, taking the punishment for all we’ve ever done wrong. By his broken body and shed blood he paid the price to bring us back to God. There is work that still needs doing in us-and some of us need more than a lick of paint(!), but if we let him into our lives by his Holy Spirit, he will live within us. If we ever feel unworthy of him spending time with us and embarrassed to open the door to him because of the mess in our lives, that’s ok as we all have it and only Jesus can put it right. We have to let him in though or it won’t get dealt with!
Here is how similar we are to the properties on Homes Under the Hammer:
- The houses need doing up! We are not perfect either (For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God- Romans chapter 3 verse 23)
- The houses are bought to be restored. Jesus’ blood buys us back for God so we can be restored to him. (But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the bloodofChrist– Ephesians chapter 2 verse 13)
- The houses are done up because they need work doing on them. Though they are the same house on the outside, they are made new on the inside! Similarly for us: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5 verse 17)
- When the house becomes a home, there is a life to be lived inside it! Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? (1 Corinthians chapter 3 verse 16)
So Jesus gave his life for us to make things right between us and God-to help us have a relationship with Him, proven by God freely giving His Holy Spirit to live inside all who ask. Would you like to become a home for the God of heaven, knowing that He has an even better home reserved in heaven for all who trust Him in this life? It’s like this:In Revelation 3 v.20 Jesus saysHere I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. It’s our choice to let him in. What will you decide?
